Flipping the calendar page to October this week brought us officially to our final month of the Salem Saturday Market for this year. Although we have five weeks left, it truly does feel as though things are wrapping up in the field. The winter crops have been planted and are snug in their beds, covered for the upcoming cooler weather. The winter squash have all been harvested and are safe and dry in the greenhouse. We were able to step away from our farming chores this week to add to our own winter provisions. We picked and pressed apples for delicious cider and canned tomatillo and tomato sauce, adding to the plethora of pickles and corn that fill our cupboard shelves from earlier summer efforts. Saturday’s full moon is known as the Harvest Moon and preservation of the harvest is in the air. I hope everyone else is filling their cupboards with the bounty of the season, for winter or just for the week. But for now, it’s a beautiful fall afternoon and we are off to harvest!
We hope to see you Saturday sometime between 9am and 3pm. The Salem Saturday Market is located at the intersection of Summer and Marion streets NE in downtown Salem.
