Tuesday was the equinox and the official start of Fall. Coincidentally, with Fall’s arrival we began harvesting the winter squash and pumpkins this week too. We planted the squash back in early May and then transplanted them from the greenhouse out to the acre a few weeks later. Since then it’s been a highlight of each week to check in and see how much they’ve grown, how many new fruit have set, how ripe those fruit are. We quickly realized we hadn’t provided enough space for the trailing plants as nearby beds were taken over. But, there’s something about bright orange pumpkins in the field that makes me smile. They seem to be an icon of autumn, a promise of cooler weather and the fall harvest. Now that the weather is changing we’ve begun bringing in the pumpkins and other winter squash for storage before we lose too many to rot in the field. This week marks the first of many with winter squash at the market.
We hope to see you Saturday sometime between 9am and 3pm. The Salem Saturday Market is located at the intersection of Summer and Marion streets NE in downtown Salem.
Thanks!
