Hello from Pitchfork & Crow ~
We’re getting ready for another day at the Salem Saturday Market tomorrow! Here’s a selection of what we’ll be bringing to market:
- Arugula Rapini
- Head Lettuce
- Leeks
- Salad Mix
Wait, just lettuce, leeks and arugula rapini? That’s all we’re bringing to market tomorrow? Yes, it’s true! The slow growth rate of crops at the farm, combined with the start of our CSA program this past week, means there isn’t enough of anything else in the field ready for harvest just yet. But, just because there isn’t a great diversity of veggies to bring to market, doesn’t mean we want to miss a week providing you what we have available. So, we’re bringing salad mix, head lettuce, leeks and arugula rapini, and we hope you’ll want to eat it!
Between rain showers this past week we were able to make a good push on our planting. Our pumpkins, winter squash, first round of corn, as well as several beds of broccoli, cabbage, Asian greens, and onions all made it out into the fields. Of course we’re not fully caught up and soon we’re hoping to get our potatoes, sweet potatoes, summer squash and cucumbers out too. Plus there’s tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants all also awaiting transplanting. The strange thing is, we don’t actually feel all that behind on field work. We’ve been able to keep very close to our plans we’d made back in December. The growth in the fields simply isn’t keeping up. Once we see an extended dry spell and some continued warm days we’re going to be ready for a bumper crop! We’ll continue working towards those warmer days, and hopefully you’ll continue to support us in the meantime.
We hope to see you Saturday sometime between 9am and 3pm. You can find us at the Salem Saturday Market near the intersection of Winter and Union streets in downtown Salem.
Thanks!
